House of Lords: Disgraced peers are still claiming expenses

Eight disgraced peers, including a convicted criminal, are still claiming their £300 daily allowance to attend the House of Lords.

Lord Taylor of Warwick was convicted in 2011 over an £11,000 expenses fraud but last year was able to claim £31,200.

Lord Paul, temporarily suspended by the Lords in 2010 over "utterly unreasonable" expenses claims, was paid £36,600 for 122 days. He voted just four times.

He said: "I only speak and vote on issues very, very close to my heart."

The revelations will boost our campaign to scrap unelected Lords, which is already backed by more than 10,000 readers.

Poll backs elected second chamber

Most voters say they are in favour of a wholly-elected House of Lords.

Some 52% told a poll anyone in a position to pass laws should be elected, while just 28% thought "experience and knowledge" was sufficient for people to be appointed to sit in the second chamber.

The People and Power study was carried out before last Thursday's announcement of another 45 peers, including 26 of David Cameron's cronies.

They included "Lord Moat", the former Conservative MP Douglas Hogg, who tried to charge taxpayers £2,000 for cleaning the moat at his country mansion, Kettlethorpe Hall in Lincolnshire.
